How did black folk practice religion?

Correct! Though African Americans were forbidden to have their own churches, slaves created "invisible institutions" called "hush harbors" where slaves meshed together African religious traditions with those of Christianity (Maffly-Kipp). Meetings at these hush harbors provided a place for slaves to practice religion as well as organize rebellions, giving slaves some sort of "psychological refuge," in the words of Maffly-Kipp.
